Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. BJJ approaches self-defence by emphasising taking an opponent to the ground, gaining a dominant position, and using several techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or choke holds.

What is Mixed Martial Arts?

Do I need to be fit to start?

No, you do not need to be fit to start. BJJ and MMA can be a great way to improve physical fitness. BJJ and MMA techniques can be adapted to accommodate various fitness levels, so beginners can start at their own pace.

Surely I'm too old to do this?
No Way!! You are never too old to start, we truly believe that no matter who you are or what walk of life you are from, old or young, weak or strong, everyone has a different pace of learning and we will cater to you and there will always be a place for you here at ETG.

Can I do a trial to make sure this is for me?

Yes of course, your first session is completely FREE come down, meet the team and get involved, and then you can make your decision if this is for you.

What's the Difference between Gi and No Gi?

So the Gi is the clothing worn sometimes referred to as a "kimono" It’s the traditional way of practising BJJ which allows the use of grips on the Gi to control an opponent to create sweeping and submission opportunities.  A coloured belt is also used which will denote your grade.
No Gi is the adaptation of BJJ to be used in MMA, when training No Gi is normally done in shorts and a t-shirt/rash guard.

What are the grades of BJJ?
As you progress through your experience in BJJ you will be graded in the following - White - Blue - Purple - Brown - Black. Each belt has the potential to have up to 4 stripes to signify your progression in that graded bracket.
